PeaceHealth Southwest's Inpatient Units Go Live with CPOE

Tuesday was the big day for PeaceHealth Southwest's adoption of Computerized Provider Order Entry (CPOE) on our remaining hospital inpatient units.
We started CPOE with a pilot on 4W, Station 2 and the ED/CDU on June 26. The Family Birth Center went live on July 17. So far well over 25,000 orders have been posted via the new CPOE tool.
As you can imagine from a change of this magnitude there continues to be some challenges which the team is addressing related to the new software and workflows.
Expert and super users continue to be on-hand 24-7 to help providers and caregivers with the new tool. Please continue to seek out your super user first with questions and then call the Command Center at ext.1301 if you have additional questions or support needs.
Here are some impressive statistics from the first day of our CPOE big bang.
- 12,000+ orders were written on the first day of PeaceHealth Southwest's housewide CPOE go-live
- 77% of orders were entered electronically

Command Center
The Command Center continues to be a busy place as teams from McKesson and the hospital coordinate the work of the go-live and address glitches in the software as they come up. The Command Center can be reached at ext. 1301.
On Privacy: What To Do When a Co-worker is a Patient
If you discover a co-worker is a patient in the hospital or clinic, you should respect their privacy and not act on this information if you obtained this knowledge through work. You must place your professional position ahead of your personal desires to visit, call or contact others. Accessing the patient's record to obtain any information, including room location if they are an inpatient, is not allowed. Once the patient or the family contacts you, a social visit or call would be permissible.
What if I am involved in the treatment, billing or other activity of a co-worker?
When a caregiver's job (e.g. billing, providing treatment) requires him/her to access and/or copy the medical information of a family member, a co-worker, or other personally known individual, then he/she should immediately report the situation to his/her supervisor who will determine whether to assign a different caregiver to complete the task involving the specific patient.

PMP: Washington State's New Prescription Drug Monitoring Program
Historically, Washington State has had one of the higher drug overdose death rates in the nation. It has been in the top 20 percentile for non-medical use of pain relievers. Ironically, WA State is also one of the last states in the nation to institute a prescription drug monitoring program (PMP).
In October of 2011, WA pharmacies starting submitting to the PMP records of all controlled substances they dispense. As of Jan 1, 2012, prescribers have had the ability to register with the PMP and gain access to a variety of data which includes all controlled prescriptions that have been dispensed to their patients since October of 2011. They are also able to view all controlled prescriptions which have been dispensed in WA under their name and DEA number. These two important pieces of data allow prescribers to provide better patient care as well as help to prevent fraudulent prescribing using their name and DEA number.
Registration with the PMP is a fairly easy online process. Go to www.wapmp.org and click on "access registration site." Once you are registered, there is also a tutorial on how to use the system at the same web address. If you review your prescribing report and find fraudulent prescriptions, please notify risk management and your practice manager right away. They in turn will notify PHSW's pharmacy for assistance and contact those pharmacies that have processed fraudulent prescriptions to warn them to be on the lookout.
