Difford Trust Benefits PeaceHealth Southwest Patients

David and Diane Difford
Former PeaceHealth Southwest board member David Difford and his wife, Diane, have made the PeaceHealth Southwest Foundation the beneficiary of a significant charitable remainder trust.

David Difford served as a director from 1978 to 1980. He says, "In those days we were concerned with financial matters dealing with equipment which cost $50,000 and now those needs are 10-fold that amount.

"Technologies have developed to include capabilities that were only a dream back then. Who would have ever thought we could evaluate the spinal cord (previously invisible with standard X-ray)? Now we can see it all with MRI equipment.

"Recognizing this need, Diane and I decided to let our estate plan benefit the Medical Center, to be used where the directors deem best."

Jean Rahn, the Foundation's executive director, reports, "We are very grateful to the Diffords for their generous gift. It will have a huge impact on the Medical Center's abilities to provide cutting-edge technologies benefiting our future patients."

Charitable remainder trust

A charitable remainder trust is a type of giving arrangement available to assist individuals or couples like Mr. and Mrs. Difford who desire to help the Medical Center, yet receive an income during their lives.

Donors (generally, but not limited to, husband and wife) receive a percentage of the value of the trust's assets, according to an agreed upon formula, each year for life or for a period of up to 20 years.

When the trust ends, its assets will be distributed to the Medical Center Foundation. There are many tax benefits too, such as an immediate income tax deduction and avoidance of capital gain tax when appreciated assets are used to fund the trust.
