Breast MRI
MRI, an abbreviation of Magnetic Resonance Imaging, does not use X-ray. An MRI uses a high-magnetic field and pulsing radio waves to create sophisticated 3-dimensional images of the breast.
MRI is not a replacement for mammography or ultrasound imaging but rather a supplemental tool that has many important uses:
- Screening women at high risk for breast cancer
- Determining the extent of cancer after a new diagnosis of breast cancer
- Further evaluating hard-to-assess abnormalities seen on mammography
