Trauma surgery is the field of medicine involving a comprehensive multidisciplinary evaluation and management of surgical patients with critical illness, often caused by an impact or accident. Many trauma patients are the victims of car crashes, stabbings and gunshot wounds. A trauma surgeon is trained in surgical critical care, and has expertise in the diagnosis, treatment and support of critically ill and injured patients, particularly trauma victims and patients with multiple organ dysfunction. These surgeons also coordinate patient care among the primary physician, critical care staff and other specialists.
