As the new century rolled around, Southwest completed:
  • A four-story parking garage on 92nd Avenue

  • A four-story medical office building to house a new musculoskeletal center, a breast care center, an ambulatory surgery department, and offices for physician clinics, including Northwest Surgical Specialists, orthopedic physicians for the Portland Trail Blazers, Portland Winter Hawks, the Portland State Athletic Department, and other teams. Northwest Surgical Specialists also operates the Rebound Sports Clinic at the Rose Quarter in Portland.

  • Expansion of the radiation oncology department, including the addition of a second linear accelerator and upgrading of radiation oncology equipment.

  • Expansion of the Emergency Department, adding patient rooms, observation beds, and a unique model for delivery of orthopedic care bringing the services of Rebound Orthopedics into the Emergency program.

  • Expansion of Intensive Care Unit to 24 beds, and 16-bed Cardiac Intensive and Intermediate Care unit.

  • Expansion and remodeling of Cardiac Cath labs, including an onsite observation unit

  • Automated bedside medication delivery system utilizing hand-held computers.
Southwest received approval from the State of Washington Department of Health to add 82 beds. The $115 million expansion nearly doubles the footprint of the existing campus, adding an estimated 287,000 square feet for clinical and support services. The medical center replaced 224 of its existing beds during the expansion.

As the decade began to wane, Southwest had completed its award-winning E.W. and Mary Firstenburg Tower, with a new Heart & Vascular Center and new facilities for Intensive Care, Cardiac Intensive Care, Progressive Care, Surgical Inpatient Care and Orthopedic and Neurosurgery Inpatient Surgical Care.

The Family Birth Center was completely renoved, and an expanded Level 3 neonatal intensive care was approved.

In the fall of 2010, Southwest entered into affiliation discussions with PeaceHealth. After an extensive due diligence review, the two hospital systems agreed to move forward with the affiliation effective January 1, 2011. The new name, PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center, and new logo (see right), are symbolic of our affiliation with the PeaceHealth family.
