Targeting Tumors with Precise Radiation

Radiation can be an effective treatment for many cancers. It is designed to work by preventing cancer cells from growing and multiplying. The goal is to slow or stop the tumor’s growth. In many cases the tumor may be completely destroyed.

Southwest offers several radiation delivery techniques, including the CyberKnife® radiosurgery system, Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), and more. These technologies avoid damage to normal tissue by delivering radiation to tumors with varying beam intensities, shapes, paths, and angles.

Southwest's Radiation Oncology Team

At Southwest, radiation treatment is a collaborative effort across many specialties: physicians, physicists, therapists, nurses, dosimetrists are all involved. Treatment must be designed for each patient, and it includes deciding different treatment energies, directing the precise location and angle of the beam, and discovering ways to modify the dosage.

Physician:

These doctors, called radiation oncologists, consult with patients, establish and execute treatment, evaluate treatment, and follow up to ensure the best possible care.

Physicists:

These experts calibrate radiation oncology equipment and specifications of therapy equipment; perform acceptance testing and QA; measure, analyze and tabulate beam data; review patient charts; and provide radiation safety education.

Therapists:

These staff members are responsible for proper simulation and delivery of radiation, use of equipment, implementation of the treatment plan, quality assurance and education.

Nurses:

Our oncology-certified nursing staff include nurse navigators to guide you every step of the way throughout your journey with cancer.

Dosimetrists:     Our dosimetrist staff plans treatment and calculates the dose of radiation, measures radiation, assists the physicist with quality control testing and other staff with treatment plans.
