Called the Study of Tamoxifen and Raloxifene, or STAR, this trial is sponsored by the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project (NSABP), which conducted the first breast cancer prevention trial with Tamoxifen and demonstrated a 49% reduction in breast cancer in women at increased risk.

The STAR study will compare Tamoxifen with Raloxifene, a new drug which is felt from early clinical trials to have a similar breast cancer prevention benefit. Additional potential benefits may include reduced risk of osteoporosis and lowering of cholesterol.
