Southwest Announces Extraordinary Doctor of the Year

On National Doctor’s Day and every day, Southwest Washington Medical Center recognizes the many world-class physicians and specialists who provide exceptional medicine for our community. This past year the hospital received more than 240 nominations through its Extraordinary Doctor recognition program from patients and staff honoring the skills and dedication of physicians who consistently go above and beyond for their patients.

Southwest employees voted on the top physician among these nominations in March, and they chose Brian Harwood, MD, of The Vancouver Clinic, as their “Extraordinary Doctor of the Year.” Dr. Harwood is a pulmonologist who also plays key support roles in patient quality initiatives and Hospice care at Southwest. As part of the nomination process, Southwest received several patient and staff notices describing their interactions with Dr. Harwood over the years including the following:

“As both a patient and co-worker, I am impressed with the outstanding care and concern Dr. Harwood provides. He definitely goes far beyond what is necessary to provide excellent healthcare.”

“Dr. Harwood has gone above and beyond in his work related to the quality of care and the safety of our patients. He works tirelessly talking to peers and encouraging the staff. He is very well respected and most effective in bringing about a change in our culture to ensure we put the patient first.”

“Brian is the most compassionate, caring and genuine doctor I've worked with in the 29 years I've been an RN. Patients love him, families love him and staff loves him. Brian is the best every single day of the year. No doubt about it!”

The public is encouraged to spotlight their own extraordinary doctors by nominating them at Southwest’s website—www.ExpectTheExtra.org. Or, grab one of the rack cards on display at the hospital and mail back to Medical Staff Services. A photo of Dr. Harwood is attached.
