The Resident Experience
While intense and challenging, a residency at PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center is not all work and no play. We strive with our residents to find a balance. Each year, our residents participate in fun activities in between their extensive duties. Many activities are annual, some ad hoc. Examples of annual and recent ad hoc activities include...

End/Beginning of year Resident Party
The last Friday in June, either the Director of Pharmacy or VP of Ancillary/Support Services hosts the staff of the department to a party at their house. This tradition has been a mainstay of PeaceHealth Southwest's program since its first year. This event provides a chance for new residents to meet the staff and for graduating residents to be recognized for their achievements.
2006 was the 10th Anniversary of our program. In celebration, residents from Year One onward congregated to share good times and energize the program for yet greater achievements. The event made for quite a group picture, including past and present residents and program leaders.

Western States Residency Conference at Asilomar in Monterrey, CA
Arguably the climax of the residency. PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center is fortunate to be located on the west coast where residents attend their annual conference in beautiful Monterrey, CA at the breathtaking Asilomar Conference Center next to the historic Pebble Beach Gold Course and its famous 17-Mile Drive. While there, residents present the results of their year-long longitudinal projects to other residents and preceptors. When not presenting or attending presentations, residents network with each other and preceptors and enjoy the surrounding area.

ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting
Residents are offered the opportunity each year to attend the American Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists Mid-Year Clinical Meeting. While there, they help explain our residency to prospective applicants for the following years, as well as present postors of their resident longitudinal project. Mid-Year also offers a great chance to network and review post-residency options.

Resident Meeting end-of-year dinner
Weekly meetings involving pharmacy management, primary preceptors, and the residents help ensure residents make needed progress and learn important management skills. At the end of the year, the managers take the residents out for dinner.

City-Wide Residency Group
The Portland-area, of which PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center is a part, features many excellent residency programs. In order to expand the horizons of each program's residents, since 1997 all the area residencies have participated in a city-wide residency program. Residents throughout the region meet regularly to share ideas and knowledge, to prepare for the Western States Conference, and to share some enjoyable experiences together. Such activities include meals and the annual Resident Vs Preceptor Softball Game.

Resident Ski Trip
Each winter our Residency Director hosts the residents and preceptors on a trip up nearby Mt Hood for some runs down the slopes.

Sports Events
Many members of the department enjoy intramural sporting events. On occasion our department gets challenged to softball games, and our record is very solid. It has become common for Pharmacy to form a team for an intramural adult soccer league in the Vancouver-area.

Ad Hoc Activities
Our department is lucky to have several 'social coordinators' who enjoy making new things happen each year. As members of the department, the residents will be actively involved. One recent such event was a Ladies Dinner, shown above and here.

Random Having Fun
Not everything in the residency is planned. You and your collegues can make your own fun!
