Specimen Collection and Transport

The quality of laboratory and pathology tests depends on the proper collection, handling and preservation of the specimen in addition to analytical factors.  Refer to specific tests in the test directory to determine specimen collection and storage requirements.

All specimen containers must be labeled with two patient identifiers:

Clinical Lab Specimens:
  1. First and last legal name
  2. Date of birth OR SWMC order requisition number
Pathology Specimens:
  1. First and last legal name
  2. Date of birth
Samples must be packaged in sealed plastic bags to prevent leakage or contamination. Place accompanying paperwork in the bag pocket, away from the specimen. Practice Universal Blood and Body Fluid precautions when handling specimens. Improperly sealed, leaky specimens are not suitable for testing.

Certain tests require scheduling or special arrangements with Southwest Laboratory prior to specimen collection (Refer to the Test Directory). Please contact PeaceHealth Southwest Client Services (514-3177) whenever you have a question or problem concerning specimen collection, labeling, storage, or transport.

Southwest Laboratory Couriers will pick up the specimens and deliver reports and supplies. The schedule of pick-up/delivery is dependent on your specific needs. Couriers are equipped to transport refrigerated, frozen and room temperature specimens and those requiring special handling.
