What is the difference between internal medicine and family medicine?

Most frequently, internal medicine doctors, or internists, are trained to care for adults. Usually internists will see patients over the age of 13 and tend to focus on geriatrics or specialize in adult diseases such as diabetes or high cholesterol.

By contrast, a family practitioner is trained to deal with the health care needs of men, women and children of all ages. Doctors who practice family medicine may provide a range of health services including preventative care, obstetrics, routine gynecological care and pediatric services.

Family Medicine with Obstetrics (Women's Care)

Several of the family medicine providers at PeaceHealth Medical Group offer gynecology examinations and obstetrical services as a part of your comprehensive patient care.

Our full-spectrum maternity care includes preconception counseling, prenatal care, deliveries, lactation support, and postpartum care. We strive to provide continuity of care, so that mothers-to-be can expect to see the same physician for every prenatal visit and for the delivery. Though one of our providers is always on call, the provider handling your obstetrical care will normally come in to deliver your baby. High-risk patients are managed in conjunction with subspecialty consultants as needed; our priority is to help you have a positive, safe, and healthy pregnancy. As a bonus, many of our providers care for children, so your doctor can be your baby's doctor as well!
